Look throughout history and you will find examples of losing forces suffering massive casualties during a retreat. Victors are often not very kind to the vanquished. Suppose after all US military have left, there remain some American civilians who for whatever reason failed to be evacuated. The Taliban now takes them captive and demands “ransom”. What would Joe do? What would any recent US President do?
