Putin will have to figure out another way to kill him. Which leads me to this question for the rabid righties here: What is it you find so attractive about Putin? Can you dare to actually criticize him? Or are you afraid of Donnie's wrath?
I mean, the guy is an ex-KGB thug who's anti-democratic, kills his political opponents and attacks his neighbors. And you won't dare to criticize him because Donald won't?
Righties = beneath contempt.
Here's part of the Times' report:
"MOSCOW —  Aleksei A. Navalny, the imprisoned Russian opposition leader, announced Friday that he had ended a more than three-week hunger strike on the recommendation of his doctors, saying that he had partially achieved his goals.

Isolated behind prison walls and with his health failing amid fears of lingering effects from a poisoning with a chemical weapon last year, Mr. Navalny had demanded treatment from doctors of his choosing. He began the hunger strike on March 31.

The prison authorities never allowed access for Mr. Navalny’s personal doctor. They did provide medical treatment, first at a prison hospital then a civilian hospital, and then this week allowed specialists to examine him.

“Doctors whom I fully trust made a statement that we have achieved enough for me to stop my fast,” Mr. Navalny said in a statement posted on his Instagram account."

Putin didn't call Trump "smart."  Putin referred to Trump as "yarkii" = bright, like a bright, shiny attention-getting object, not smart-bright.
.
Did Putin Really Call Trump ‘Brilliant’? Experts Say It Got Lost in Translation

"... "Yarkii" (яркий), the word Putin used, does indeed mean "brilliant." But not in an intellectual sense, according to Russian experts.  “To a Russian ear, the general tone of Putin's phrase is complimentary, but not over the top.”  "The word means someone who's bright, colorful. It means 'brilliant' if you're thinking about a bright light, but it's not 'brilliant' if you're thinking about someone's intelligence," Angela Stent, director of the Center for Eurasian, Russian and East European Studies at Georgetown University, told NBC News."
.
"... Had the Russian leader meant brilliant in terms of intelligence, he would have said "blestiashchii" (блестящий) instead of using "yarkii," which Russians use for light or colors, Gronas said."
.
Trump has repeatedly claimed that Putin called him (Trump) a "genius," above and beyond mere brilliance. A lie, every time Trump says it.

No one wants to go to war with Russia. It's just nice to see this country's leader not sucking Putin's dick. Is that too much to expect?
