I've got a BDL700 from the early 90's
What's nice about the Mossy 20" 590 is the 9 round capacity....870 is 4 rounds if I remember correctly.
I have a Benelli Super 90 for the house.
I am not a gun owner and have no plans to be one.
If someone broke in I would tell him to take what you want other than my PC. I don't have much.
But what do people think the best weapon to keep in a home or none.
Getting a security or alarm system is also an option.
Big dog(s), trained are very, very good.
Alarm system is, very, very, very, good.
Shotgun, 12 guage, #1 buckshot. The firearm of choice for home defense.
I recommend the Mossberg 590.
And, add two more layers. Serious marital arts training and a snub-nosed thirty-eight in case you can't reach your shotgun, your dogs have been poisoned (not likely) and your alarm system has been tampered with (again, not likely). Most people breaking and entering scope out easy targets.
Snubs take a bit of training...
Other practical things to consider...
Excellent doors & locks as well as lighting.
Baseball bat.
One of the most inaccurate guns around because of the short barrel. Also less stopping power than my Colt 1911 .45.
That old Army Colt is even better than a brick.
Alarm system is, very, very, very, good.

I've heard of some QA issues with the Remington stuff in the last few years....

A big dog is great as long as you add them to yur homeowners policy and have a large cap, 500,000 +. Most good gaurd dogs are the aggressive breeds and tend to raise homeowners ins. I have a 1/2 boxer 1/2 black lab, he's about 100 lbs and is very protective. When I was selling my last 2 homes the realtor didn't even show the room his kennel is in, and I feel my wife and kids are pretty safe home alone, so I love him being there.
Shotgun is fine, even a .22 hand gun, the big thing is being comfortable with what you use and safe in how you handle it. I have a number of firearmsbut they are locked in a gunsafe for safety.
Alarm system is, very, very, very, good.

I definitely agree with the big dog, alarm, lighting, gun and/ or baseball bat.
The price of a 4-8 camera surveillance system has come down... worth looking into.
I personally like a machete rather than a baseball bat because you can swing it faster and will
do more damage.
Nunchakus are better than a bat too and a great workout..... check your local laws.
Go to the innercity of chicago and start there. Good luck.
Gun control is very important and I firmly believe in it.
Yes gun control.
You need to choose a weapon that you can control. The kick/recoil of some guns, be it a shot gun, hand gun or rifle can cause a person to lose control of the weapon and possibly endanger the innocent. Also the size and weight of the gun must be considered. If the wife, for example, is to use it she is most likely not as big and strong as you and may need to protect/defend herself and the kids. Therefore you would need a weapon she can control also.
In my opinion a Sig or Glock 9mm is a good all around choice.
Gun Control
You Must Be Able To Control The Gun At All Times.
Thank you

Completely agree. I think anyone can handle almost any gun if they are taught to handle it, my wife is 5'5" 135 lbs and shoots both my 10mm handguns pretty well. A 9 mm is her personal choice and I'm fine with that, she hates shooting the 12 ga but could if she had to to defend herself.
...your wife discovers your TER account & read your reviews, lol.
Trotter couldn 't site one example of an assault weapon or war weapon or high capacity magazine being used to successfully defend anyone against violence by gun either in the SJC hearing or on Lawrence O'Donnell tonight.
The hearing was supposed to be about assault or war weapons bans, not other firearms.
Trotter was an imbecile who was going to dump her shit just like Sarah Fired from Faux Palin no matter what the question was. She used a fictional case of a woman using an "assault weapon" her words gun purists, a woman with "a scary looking gun" and a fictional case of a woman with a baby facing down five imaginary intruders.
And just for the record, Republicans are all over defending the fetus in the uterus, but don't give a rat's ass what happens to most children not their own or their friends when they are delivered.
Trotter wouldn't answer whether she believes in a woman's right to choose whether to deliver her fetus if a woman's health is threatened.

Thats not what owning an AR is about, it's for protection if the government fails. I say if in a very condecending way because can you name one government in the history of the world that hasnt failed?
I know you'll comment that I'm a conspiricy theorist of anarchist, but history has ALWAYS repeated itself. The USSR was a huge powerful country less than 30 yrs ago and it took less 24 months to collapse completely.
If there is a severe climate change even in the USA, going years without rain (dustbowl 80-90 yrs ago) the starvation and unemployment we'll see could easily end up in large areas of killing and looting.
She s seen reviews and is ok with it, she experimented with women in college and has talked about joining me. Hasn't happened yet but she has emailed a few about it.
You are a lucky man indeed!
Wife of the century!
Maybe, and if thats what she want to do I'd be ok with it.
....unless you are prepared to use it. That means you have to be confident you can kill if the need arises.
If you think you can "scare away" people by pointing a gun at them, you will most likely have your firearm used on you.
TAKE A GUN SAFETY COURSE!!! We don't need more idiots shooting themselves or somebody they love accidently.
A dog is a very effective home defense system. Intruders usually pass on a home with a dog barking. If the dog bites unwelcome guests, even better.
IMO, the best home defense is a pump shotgun in 12 or 20 gauge with #4 shot. Larger shot will penetrate walls and hurt someone not intended for harm. #4 will make big holes in anybody. Put a light on the weapon. You can find them at gun shows or on the internet. (for now)
Are you familiar with the sound of a pump shotgun racking a round? EVERYBODY is. You don't have to understand English to know what it means. Hearing that sound will make almost anyone reconsider their course of action.
Be safe and don't listen to the gun control advocates. They may mean well, but nothing being proposed would have prevented Newtown.

which only matters if the bad guy has you outgunned ! Then you are in deep kimchee anyway.
for anyone who decides to invade my personal space.
For self defense. Not extraordinary stopping power, but the ammo I use is an "attention getter". What's the use of carrying a cannon if it is too uncomfortable to carry? Who is going to carry a 44 Ruger RedHawk or a .50 Desert Eagle?
For home defense, well... the Rem 870. Even my daughter can blast the smile off of anyone coming up the stairs uninvited. The key point is that my entire family knows how to safely and effectively use any gun in our home.
If you want a security alarm at night, stack up aluminum cans inside your door. Cheap and easy. Makes a hell of a racket when they get knocked over.
