I would say living as a vegetable with a tube in your mouth is suffering. I never heard of ANYBODY saying they wanted to be kept alive as a vegetable with a feeding tube. Since she cannot live without a feeding tube, giving her one is, by definition keeping her alive and therefore "prolonging her suffering".

I would not want to live as a vegetable. I have specific instructions to my wife which I have signed that say so. I have never heard ANYBODY say they would want to live as a vegetable. She apparently told her husband she would not want to be kept alive as a vegetable. I believe it. Honestly, who would?
But, because of the opposition from the religious right, we cannot seem to make it more humane for people like Terri who would not want to live as a vegetable. This is the only choice. It's sad, but we should actually change the law in the other direction -- they should be allowed to give her a leathal dose of morphine or something that will let her go in peace.
Everything else is just a grand-standing, side-show distraction from this point.

If you have made that choice for yourself, and executed a durable power of attorney to that end, I applaud you! I executed such a document over 25 years ago and had it recorded in the county of my residence. However, that is not the case here; it was never brought up by Michael Schaivo until after his court settlement.
It leaves plenty of room for question, and it is my contention that when the matter is questionable, you error on the side of life.
