Not that anyone here would do anything illegal or untoward, but in AZ, if you ask someone whether they're a member of law enforcement, there's no actual law that says they have to admit it.
For example, I just watched a movie (which inspired this thread) where a girl asks a gentleman "Are you a cop? You have to tell me if you are." Pure fiction. Again, just supplying some interesting information.
Isn't that interesting? I'm so goddamn interesting. It's hell to be such an interesting person. I mean, I bet it would be. 
they always separate people to talk to them? Not just to compare stories! They are some kinda lyin' sumbitches. Kinda like Politicians and Jehovah Witnesses.

Correct me if I'm wrong please, but I don't believe there is a law saying you can't lie to local PD. I know there is a Fed law saying you can't lie to the FBI.
Yes, the question, "are you a cop?" is kind of funny. I once said on the phone, "well, yes I am but I'm a corrupt cop so it's all good, no worries." Of course, she hung up on me. 
Say this to the bacon:
Am I under arrest?
Am I free to go?
I will not answer any questions?
No, you may not search me, my car, my bag, my backpack, my seeing-eye-dog's anus, etc.
