Oh, yes, it's just amazing that the WNBA Champs don't get the same recognition as the NL West Champs. Do you ever think before you type? Oh, and belated congrats to the Mercury--they should be commended for winning the WNBA. But, let's keep things in context--that doesn't compare to what the Diamondbacks just accomplished.

Men and women are not treated equally, but it cuts both ways I'm afraid. Even in my 20's when was in significantly better shape and had more hair, nobody was offering me $$$+/hr to have "fun".
It's not just because they are women, it's that women's basketball, at least at present, is less exciting than men's to the majority of fans. Some sports the women's side is as popular or more than the men's...gymnastics, tennis, volleyball(both sand and college indoor), and others. That's not to take away from the accomplishments of the Mercury, but to just broad stroke it as "just because they are women" is overly simplistic and not accurate IMHO. The market will dictate what will take off and what will have a limited audience.
