Andy Declares War on War
Andy Rooney Observes Veterans Day And Declares War On War
Andy on War
Andy declares war on war.
(CBS) I keep this calendar on my desk, and while I don't look at it very often I notice that this Wednesday is Veterans Day. It's one of ten federal holidays that we have. Well, I'm a veteran and I hate that name.
Considering that we aren't technically at war now, there's an awful lot about war in the news even when it's not something like Veterans Day. I suppose that's because there's so much fighting in the world. There are half a dozen small wars going on right now - some of them in places most of us have never been to or even never heard of before.
Too many young men and women with a whole life ahead of them are getting killed before they have a chance to live it and for what?
Of all the things that men do - historically mostly men - fighting a war to kill other men is the most uncivilized.
Wars have been fought through time and we may think we're more civilized now than people were 100 or 500 years ago but there's no sign that fighting wars is a thing of the past. There's always one going on somewhere.
Eight of my classmates - friends really - in school and college were killed in World War II. I've had 60 years of life that those eight friends never had. We call this a civilization?
More than 5,200 American men and women, kids really - have been killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. It may be a small number in two small wars but if you're one of those killed or even a father or mother of one, there's nothing small about it.
Why not, instead of commemorating Veterans Day, we establish and work on what we could call a "No War Day".
The name doesn't have much of a ring to it but a day like that would be worth celebrating.

I just recently saw Tony Orlando at one of our hometowm casinos and he did a whole set of course starting it off with why "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Around the ole Oak Tree" was so special to him and how it touched all of us (hopefully all)but it too had a war of it own

"Tie a Yellow Ribbon 'Round the Old Oak Tree"
The symbol became widely known in civilian life in the 1970s. It was the central theme of the popular song "Tie a Yellow Ribbon 'Round the Ole Oak Tree", Written by Irwin Levine and L. Russell Brown and recorded by Tony Orlando and Dawn among many others, as the sign a released convict requested from his wife or lover, to indicate that she still wanted him and that he would therefore be welcome to return home. He would be able to see it from the bus driving by their house, and would stay on the bus in the absence of the ribbon. He turned out to be very welcome: there were a hundred yellow ribbons.
From the Library of Congress:
In October 1971, newspaper columnist Pete Hamill wrote a piece for the New York Post called "Going Home." In it, college students on a bus trip to the beaches of Fort Lauderdale make friends with an ex-convict who is watching for a yellow handkerchief on a roadside oak. Hamill claimed to have heard this story in oral tradition.
In June 1972, nine months later, Reader's Digest reprinted "Going Home." Also in June 1972, ABC-TV aired a dramatized version of it in which James Earl Jones played the role of the returning ex-con. A month-and-a-half after that, Irwin Levine and L. Russell Brown registered for copyright a song they called "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Old Oak Tree." The authors said they heard the story while serving in the military. Pete Hamill was not convinced and filed suit for infringement.
One factor that may have influenced Hamill's decision to do so was that, in May 1973, "Tie A Yellow Ribbon" sold 3 million records in three weeks. When the dust settled, BMI calculated that radio stations had played it 3 million times--that's seventeen continuous years of airplay. Hamill dropped his suit after folklorists working for Levine and Brown turned up archival versions of the story that had been collected before "Going Home" had been written
Take care, share some love, shake a soldiers hand, put a Flag on a grave and most of all Pray that all our soldiers come home soon...maybe we can start a new trend...
Love to all!
Terri

this will never work, makes too much sense
In a perfect world, the comments above make sense. However, our freedoms are due to many giving their lives. Our military is volunteer and each recruit entering knows the risk but still enlists. Enlisting quotas are at their highest in over 20 years. Volunteer mind you.
I agree, we shouldn't kill each other but as a former Marine with both my sons being Marines, we do what is necessary to keep our country free. I sleep at night knowing there are so many who would risk their life to keep me safe.
I think patriotism says it best. I tear up when I hear the National Anthem and think how cool my kids are to volunteer to protect their country and it's citizens.
No, I don't believe in killing each other but unfortunately wars are much much more involved than that.
P.S. No other country has near as many people trying to get in as ours. No matter how bad we seem, I think the United States is still by far the best.

Good for you. I know Jenni of San Diego has a daughter serving now and Ciara served...I'm really proud of you girls and really admire your courage and bravery...Don't get much better than that...Thank you ladies...that's awesome
There are no words that can even come close describe those Americans that volunteer for war and waaaaaaay toooo many words that describe those low life sum of the earth worthless idiots that wear bombs
We probably should have Sheriff Joe and his outlaw gang as well as those that think were criminals (providers and hobbies) assist in the fight
I don't get on TER very ofen these days but just noticed your posts.
Hugs,
Ciara
