I just spent some time in Kentucky. Visited a great bourbon bar in the Galt House Hotel. Drank some very expensive small-batch bourbons, that you won't find here. For readily-available bourbon, however, I think Woodford Reserve is an excellent choice and value (and it comes in a cool bottle).
I enjoy scotch whiskey. Fortunately or unfortunately I'm not a connoisseur of scotch. Actually I would have more fun being a connoisseur of providers. I always enjoy the old stand bys Dewars, Johnny Walker Red and J&B. Recently I've found that the next step up, the 12 year old Glenlivet and Glenfiddich's taste pretty good. I was given a bottle of Oban which I really enjoyed. The 18 year old scotches are wasted on me. I don't really appreciate the difference. That is not to say that the 18 year old providers are not worthy of a taste.
