I don't participate much on the board.  I do however, read it often and I am very enlightened by the knowledge of the participants.  Being new to the Phoenix area (less than a year), I could use some advice on a non hobbyist subject.

My middle daughter moved out here about a month after I did.  She is a single mother of 2 teenagers.  Both children have been given the same amount of love, compassion, attention, monetary items and schooling.  Her eldest child got in with the wrong crowd last year and began using drugs and even ran away once.

My daughter is on state insurance and has had very little luck in getting any kind of help for her daughters drug addiction or her attitude problems.  She has wrote a letter to the state asking for help in placing her in an in-care rehab center.  To our utter surprise, my grandchild is not using enough drugs to qualify (How much is enough drugs)? The finances are not within my daughters reach to send my grandchild to a private rehab.  Every which way we turn, the door is closed in our face.

I have tried to help as much as possible.  But my grandchild is taking the life-force out of our family.  I am ashamed to say, I can only be around her for a few hours before I want to take a switch to her behind.

What I would like to ask of the people who frequent this board is:  Do you know of any services we could use in the phoenix area that may help this child turn her life around before it is to late?

This is a child that never raised her voice to anyone and was a complete joy to be around 9 months ago.  I want that child back!

If this is an inappropriate discussion, I do apologize.  I just thought someone else may have been through a similar situation.

I do have an email address if this is an inappropriate topic and any and all advice would be welcome either here on the board or through email - [email protected]

Thank you so much

Desertwater:  There are a variety of choices. different parts of the state have different entities like Prehab in the east valley which can provide from group counseling to residential placement.  To get there you need to go through the county's mental health provider.
Another avenue is to call the Juvenile Division of superior court.  The probation Department for the Court can sit down with the family and make suggestions for help.  They might suggest filing an incorrigibility complaint against the daughter to get her before a judge and try to get her on track.  Maricopa County Juvenile Court Center - Durango 3131 West Durango Phoenix, Arizona 85009-6292(602) 506-4533
Southeast 1810 South Lewis Mesa, Arizona 5210-6234

I would suggest calling the school she attends and they may be able to provide some other resources.

Best of luck- there are many teens/parents facing these issues. I have had a few friends face the same problems and it's a very difficult problem to  deal with.

A friend of mine contacted CPS in the same situation and they removed the child for 90 days to help them get over their problems, when CPS was unsuccessful they removed the child permenently from the family and made them a ward of the state. A sad situation but in some situations necessary for the welfare of the family and the other children.

Thank you for illustrating how providers are often so much more than what they do for a living.

Thank you very much for the responses.  We have trid a few of the places mentioned.  The big problem is getting the agencies you contact to call you back.  We are having luck with two of the places mentioned.  My family has a long road ahead but a least there is a place to start now!

Thank you again!

I think you've been given some great references, but the word that popped into my head was:  counseling.  Yes, this is included in drug rehab, but before she spends weeks or months away from her family I think she needs to go through some family counselling.  Moving is difficult on anyone.  To teenagers it can be devastating.  That period of life is difficult enough without having your social structure disrupted.  It could just be that she's struggling with adjusting to a new environment and her emotions are being manifested in drug use.  It sounds to me like she's crying out for help, and is not some hard core user that can't walk away from the drugs.

Whatever you decide, good luck.
