The Sultan of the Ottoman Empire had his harem with his many wives and concubines. Within the harem there were bitter political conflicts and intrigues as the women fought for power and position. The younger ones wanted to get more time in bed with the Sultan. The older ones who had born him a son wanted to gain favors for the boy in the hope that he would be the next Sultan. Some of the women even achieved actual political power and sat behind the Sultan hdden by a screen during Councils of State and had thhe title of Valide Sultan.

The Sultan's sons lived within the harem, and when they were young men they had to be careful of being caught with their father's concubines. They also plotted against each other in their own efforts to become Sultan. There were betrayals, entrapments, lies, deceptions. After all, this is the place where "Byzantine plot" was invented.

While some people talk about a market between hobbyists and providers, sometimes my view is that we have a created a "shared harem". Not one Sultan, but many Sultans (maybe some are vizars, some are merchants, ...) As in the Ottoman harem, much of the real power,  knowledge, strength, and wisdom is with the women. At times there are intrigues, conflicts, conspiricies, like in the harem of the Ottoman Empire.

Of course, there are differences. Now the Sultan leaves a gift in a white envelope, as opposed to ...

Barebear that is the best post I've seen in some time related to the drama that insues this board.

You hit the nail right on the preverbal head....

The Sheika is amazed, and quite pleased with your interest in Middle Eastern history.

Barebear, the Sheika simply insists that you continue your studies. There is much to be gained by studying the palace intrigue of the Ottomans, but the Sheika can assure you that it reads better than it lives.

At times, the betrayal, deceit, deception, and imminent brutality defy the imagination. Even today, for the ladies, there is still virtually no freedom in the Middle East. Women are merely chattels, or they are treated as game pieces in a struggle for power.

In the States, the situation is much better, but there is always room for improvement.

Ottoman? Every serious hobbiest or provider should have one. Think of the fun you could have!

Oh, you were talking about a different ottoman :-)

a poet like you should never lie upon the ground

in some nations. While in the past some women had opportunities for education and power, there are some nations in which the current leadership hasd turned the clock back 800 years!

On the other hand, there are some places where women are gaining a greater degree of autonomy, education and power. In the urban areas of Turkey, Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, the UAE (for women who are nationals) there are some changes for some women.

Hanan Ashrawi, for example, is a woman whom I deeply admire and respect.

Unfortunately, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Syria, Lebanon, Algeria and Iraq have not really progressed. As you said, women are often game pieces - they may appear in public in modern dress when Westerners come for government meetings, but it is all for show.

And everywhere there is always room for improvement.

Holy Beez-Kneez, Barebear... you just might be on to something!

Still being relatively new to the scene, I think I'm still at the status of 'glorified foot-washer'.  But who knows what can happen?!

In the meantime, I'll hopefully escape detection whilst I fellate the sons o' the Sultan... and his troops... and his elite guard.  (All just to keep up morale, of course.)  ;)
