Let your conscience be your guide

I went shopping at KOHL’S this evening and made a purchase of $119.54.  I gave the cashier $120.00.  He checked my money with a marker and gave me $80.46 in change.  I told the gentleman  he gave me too much money but he insisted that I gave him 2 one hundred dollar bills.  That was Not the case; I gave him a 100 dollar bill and a 20 dollar bill.  I said “you are wrong and he denied it.  So at that point I left the store and said “okay.”

I couldn’t shake the negative feeling I was having.  I told him the truth and he didn’t want to believe it.  I knew exactly how much money I had.  What should have been a purchase of 120 dollars turned into 40.

At this point should I have put my conscience at ease?  Some people wouldn’t have said anything at all.

I still couldn’t let it go.  While driving home and talking to a friend about it, I knew I wouldn’t be able to rest until I called the store and talked to the manager.  I informed the manager of the “situation.”  I let her know” if a register comes up short 80 dollars that I would come back down to the store and pay it.”

My conscience basically cost me 80 dollars, darn it!  What would you guys have done in this situation?

You were right in calling. Maybe there's a problem
with that certain cashier, that the manager needs to know about. Maybe you so distracted the cashier
that he didn't know which way is up.

You will always know that you did the right thing in this case. You helped that cashier who couldn't help themself. You know the register was going to be short at the end of the night.  The sleazy thing would have been to say nothing.

This you have more than responible in this matter. I would have let it go after telling the clerk of their mistake. If you concience ends up costing you $80...well probably would make you happier giving it back than any thing you could have spent the money on.

My 2cents anyway

I can understand your feelings Angelina. Even though you tried to right a wrong and they insisted that you keep the money it still wouldn't sit well with me. I would of done the same thing as you. Ill gotten gains bring bad karma. Hang on to the money until friday, and if they don't call you about it,then take it to a local homeless shelter,Aids Center,Church mission and donate it or buy 80 dollars worth of food and drop it off at a local food bank, or what ever you think would turn the negative into a positive. People are probobly going to think we are crazy, but I really believe that keeping the money and spending it on something for yourself won't bring you any good energy. Just pay it forward to someone or some organization that will do good with it. Now that will gain you some good karma.

You did the  right thing. You felt there was  something wrong and you took the steps to correct it.   You may not see  it or  know it but some good will come of it.  We get out of life what  we put into it.  When you put good in, it will return to you.
Oh no...  now I am  sounding  like a fortune  cookie.

The only person whose opinion matters is your own. I learned a long time ago that it's easier to take someone thinking you're a goody-two-shoes than living with guilt.

You did the right thing at first...after that I would have kept the money. Its not your fault Kohl's hired someone that can't count.

At the end of the day, we all have to look at ourselves in the mirror and we will either like or not like what we see. We have to be a peace first with ourselves before we can be at peace with others. Good for you Angelina, you did the right thing here and you should be pleased with what you see in your mirror.

All is well.  KOHL'S called me up this morning and I delivered the money.  It was interesting to hear all of your opinions.  May I have my key now JimorJimmy?  LOL   I am thinking about starting a movement, anybody want to join?  :)

you did the right thing. Big shortages on a register like that, can cost someone their job. You may have saved him from his own stubborn self.

"What would you guys have done in this situation?"

You did more than most would have, in that situation. If I were you (and I have had something like this happen in the past), I'd just keep the money as a windfall. You were honest, but you're not responsible for the clerk's stupidity or poor training.
