I'm 100% for references and if you cant verify somebody via a "handle" then real 411 is a must for safety...but I guarantee you I'm not the only one out there who's referenced by there TER (or other source) handle all the time....

Every field is not required, just fill it out the best you can with the information that is most verifiable. If that info includes your handle then thats not a problem, but a lot of people dont have handles. So you are absolutely correct, its kind of an either/or form.
