Best area to stay?

I'll be coming to Phoenix with a friend in a few weeks and was wondering what is the best area to stay in.  I'm looking for a 5 star hotel in an artsy or touristy area that has a lot to offer.

The Montelucia
The Sanctuary on Camelback
The Hyatt at Gainey Ranch
The W Hotel in Old Town Scottsdale

There is a lot going on down in Tempe as well but more younger crowd there.
