Head Strong: It's time for prostitution to be legalized

Interesting article from a local paper.
" There's another argument in support of legalizing prostitution. I call it the Quasimodo Theory. Some among us are never going to find companionship for a variety of reasons. And their solitary existence is accentuated by the constant barrage of sexual stimulation we see every day on television and billboards, in our mailboxes in the form of fashion catalogs, in the ring-card girls at boxing matches and halftime dancers at a Sixers game. Even in the midst of campaign coverage, it's there: in the below-the-desk shots of gloss-lipped and shiny-legged cable TV news anchors.

It can't be healthy for some people to feel the amassed pressure of such images, such expectations, and have their personal expectations go unfulfilled.

And again, some guys just won't have the opportunity to find happiness, even short-term. But who's to say they don't deserve a chance?

What this campaign for legalized prostitution lacks is someone to champion the cause. I know a well-qualified man who'll soon have time on his hands."

MP,
I totally agree with you on that such hence the editorial piece that I posted earlier in the week. There is actually several groups out there now that are taking a stand for this. We just need more people to help back us up. I have some sites of some people but you will need to back channel me for info on this.

But, everyone guys and ladies, we need to form a support group and start linking arms and just not tongues to get through this and we can. There is strength in numbers, and you should always stand up for what you believe in.

The only downside that I would see is that prices may rise (of course they could go down also), sales tax added, and at some level it will require public disclosure (you think folks pick abortion clinics-imagine the Christian right in the red light district).  While getting arrested is a big minus, there are some pluses to having it like it is, especially with the advent of the internet and the explosion of hotels.

He took the words right out of my mouth.  It is more of a moral issue than a legal issue.

It's like Mark Perkel, one of the oldest advocates for legalizing prostitution.  It is a long road ahead but it will happen.

Are we not the only industrialized, Western country where it is not legal?

Anyway, I'm not sure that the downsides you mentioned would be much of a factor.  For one thing, it would be worth a little more money to not have to worry about being arrested.  That being said, the market would dictate what people would be willing to pay, so taxes, etc. would probably take a bigger bite out of what the providers take home than anything else.  Of course, I imagine that, even if it were legal, the vast majority of it would still take place via cash transactions, making it rather easy to underreport one's earnings.

Furthermore, it would be much better in general to have it legal and regulated.  For one thing, getting the streetwalkers off the streets and removing the criminal element from the equation would be a major benefit.  Introducing a licensing system requiring periodic drug and STD testing would make things safer.  And I don't think there would be an issue with the Christian right picketing places...after all, a brief look through either of the free weeklies will give you the addresses of most of the massage parlors in town, and I don't see anyone picketing those.

Never mind the fact that, even if one could not get arrested for it, it is still in the interest of both the hobbyist and the provider to maintain discretion.  I can't see why it would be in any incall's best interest, unless they're located in the middle of the desert somewhere, to have a big neon sign over their door advertising their services.  I think advertising over the internet would still be the way to go.

I don't see why the hotel thing would be an issue, either, unless laws were specifically passed to prohibit providers offering incalls in hotels.  If not, worst case scenario would be a noise complaint from a neighboring room, but that could happen anyway.

I'm all for it, personally.

It will be politically suicidal should any politician talk about legalization of prostitution. There are too many conservatives and hypocrites around and they all emphasize their religeous faith and morality in order to get voters.

People on the religious right think it might happen in our lifetime.
