Don't understand what the fuss is all about. I did try Tony Luke's one time back in 2011 and it was good then. So it's been a while. And I have never tried the cheese whiz. I won't eat cheese out of the can. Lol I prefer provolone.
So I know this may be a very common question from visitiors but I am a true Philly Cheesesteak lover & visiting! Here in Las Vegas I believe ive been lied to, there's a place called “Pops" that claims to make the original sandwich with cheese wiz & all ... So I'm on a quest to find the original & greatest sandwich in Philly during my stay. Any recommendations are highly appreciated!
The iconic rivals Pat's and Geno's are over rated tourist traps. Try Sonny's near Independence Square and if you can travel John's Roast Pork on Snyder near Delaware Avenue.
But here is the real news. the best sandwich in town is the roast pork with broccoli rabe found at John's and more famously at Dinic's at the Reading Terminal market. So friggin' good.
Johns have one of the better cheesesteaks.. And u can also pick up a roast pork sandwich while there. I also like Philips on passyunk and Steves in the northeast.

When i first moved to Philly a friend to me to Pat's, EXCELLENT CHEESESTEAK WITH CHEEZ WIZ!! I have been told that Gino's at the opposite corner is also good....enjoy
That is where it all began and the product of both are fine. More than fine. It is THE place to go for an out of towner. In addition, numerous, numerous locals go there every day. If it really is "the experience" you are looking for, with all the history and a great sandwich, you'll love it at 9th and Passyunk.
Lol I didn't expect that many, if I attempted to test all I may leave never wanting another! I'll look into all the restraunts, thanks everybody for the recommendations!
but I've had friends mention that Jim's and Campo's are good places for cheesesteaks. I'll be up there in a month to watch some baseball, I welcome any food/drink/activity/escort recommendations.
They also have an awesome meatball sub and when I asked about it the cashier said, "Yeah, it's pretty good, my grandma makes the meatballs from scratch every morning." Hello, SOLD! It's around 3rd and Market in Old City. Definitely check them out of you're in that neighborhood.
