can be tricky things.  Those who post w/ an alias are either trying to inject humor, make a point, or further their agenda.

It is those who use their alias to promote their agenda or flame another that are cowards.  Yes, they may be afraid of the reprocussions, but that's life.

My theory on life is say what you have to say and own it; don't hide!

Use of an alias seems to elicit quite a response in posters.  While TER allows use of an alias, and more than one alias at that (although can't use handle and alias in same thread), there is most often a negative response to someone posting under an alias - whether he/she is making a point or looking for information about someone or something.

So my question to both guys and ladies is:

Under what circumstances would you or do you use or condone use of an alias?

Speaking for myself, I have used an alias on posts where I'm trying to make the point of discussion the focus, not tied into anything else about me.

As far as alias use is concerned, I will NEVER give information about ladies and, depending on the nature of the question, the hobby itself to an alias.  Although there are always exceptions, I generally don't mind alias use in a discussion- about-experiences thread although most everyone is trying to figure out who's behind the alias anyway, lol.  And I'll generally not respond to an alias stating an inflammatory position in a thread.

Your view(s) ?

I may sign as Dr. Sigmoidal Fraud.  or if the discussion centers around something political, I may be 'tricky richard' yuk yuk... but normally, I do have the guts to use BSD, and those that have met me in person know that I and my online pseudonym are very different.  but the BSD handle, well, it is who I am in my mind... and I don't mind being connected with him!

I agree with you South... the only time using an alias is objectionable is when flames start to appear... thats someone hiding behind an alias to cause someone else some distress.. in a discussion where an alias might be used  not necessarily to conceeal ones identity but rather not associate the thought with the identity..its fine. Some use alias's for sinister and  selfserving purposes.... thats wrong!!!!

Thanks for bringing this question to the forum. I have been very grateful for the resource that TER is to us hobbyists (and providers too), but I have been reluctant to post for reasons of needing to be as discreet as possible in my personal life.. I'm sure I'm not the only one. So when I am compelled to post something.. usually a heads up on a rip-off, or a safety question, I have posted (as I am now) under my longstanding alias, with impression that this would perhaps provide an extra layer of anonymity, not from my fellow TER members, but from outside "researchers" (LE, divorce lawyers, etc.). My occasional posts have usually been met with at least some hostility or distrust which I have found a little confusing. Hope this sheds some lite on a different category of alias poster. Looking forward to some good discussion on this.

Well Lefty, since you asked, I feel compelled to kick in.  Let me say first that I tend to be honest on these boards...boards like TER, as well as financial/stock boards like Yahoo or Investor Village, where people post about specific investments.  Even if I hold a stock, if I see something in the company or management that I don't like, I tend to be very outspoken about it.  Usually pisses lots of people off, as in: "you might scare new investors away."  Well I think that's horseshit.  I look at these boards and the internet in general as just another means of communication, and overall I believe myself to be a relatively honest person...that, readers, you can either accept or not.

As an aside, my honesty often hurts me.  When I contact a provider, I'm open as to things like my age, physical ailments, constraints and the like.  I don't want to be surprised by a provider not being what she purports to be, so similarly I'm open when describing myself, wants, needs and can and can't do's.  As a result, I've been "rejected" on more than one occasion.  Like everyone else, rejection never feels good, but I get over it, and in the end it just serves to prove to me that had that intended provider union taken place it ultimately would have not been a positive one.

Ok...enough with the digression.  I'll go out on a limb here and hazard a guess that Southpaw isn't your real name.  Bet Bizzarosuperdude and Christophtac are pseudonmyms too.  Similarly my educated guess tells me that Solana Jewel, Macy Madison and Tiffany Lockheart aren't the real names of those providers.  In other words they are aliases.

Know why: very simple, isn't it?  The "hobby" ain't legal!  Accordingly no one will post their real name here...provider or "hobbyist."  Doesn't take a rocket scientist to get there, right?  Further, even if it were legal, or if LE NEVER enforced, we'd still use aliases for a host of reasons....don't want family members knowing what we're up to; want to maintain our "real lives" without complications or questions; embarassed that we actually "pay for it!"  Shite, the list could go on and on.  So the fact remains: we ALL use aliases here.

Now what you're talking about is the use of an alias for our alias...multiple screen names.  My opinion:  They should NEVER be allowed...no exceptions.  EVERYONE should have the balls to say what they want under the identity they've chosen within TER.  Sort of along the lines of "post what you mean, mean what you post, or just don't post at all."

Frankie(which by the way really is my first name, not that it matters at all)

I would only add that consistantly using ONE name on TER makes a great deal of sense... it allows one to build up a credible body of opinion.  Folks can tell if you are consistent - they can also figure out what your "game" is... and if you would be to their liking (in the case of providers).

and yea, you can bet, that if you look in the phone book, you are not likely to find a Mr. Bizzaro Superdude living off Market street! lol!!!  but Then again.... who knows what John Street does for hobbys!!! lol!!!

The way eye see it the term alias AS USED on this board is any name other than the one on your TER birth certificate.
For the purpose of this board The name on your TER birth certificate is your "real name" and any other name you use is an alias
As for me, I suppose, technially,  you could say I  have numerous aliases, however since the Followme family is so large I allow my cousins and other family menbers to sign on using my TER log in name then go to their names such as
SantaFollowme Claus
FatherFollowme
EasterFollowmeBunny
PopeFollowmeLXIX
DrFollowmeOBGYN
RabbiFollowme
Followmeopolis
to name just a few of my family
So technically these are aliases , however in my case they are all real  members of the followme family

I hope this clears it all up

Thank You
