Overall they are both equally safe, it seems from studies if you know how to use a condom (male or female) then you are going to use one effectively and if not... well then you have increased odds of failure for both types.
As was mentioned use lube, you can't naturally lubricate the inside of a female condom so you may need to pause to relubricate it once in awhile.
