Computer security question

I have searched and found a few threads on wiping history on computers used for hobbying.  Can someone explain it to me slowly?  I am fairly computer literet, but I want to make sure I am doing it the easiest way possible.

Right now, I go in to the control pannel to internet options and delete everything.  Some have said that things are still saved.  I don't think I can install a new program, since the wife does have access to my computer sometimes.

Any suggestions?

That will work in most cases. If someone really wanted to recover the deleted files, they could.

If you use Firefox for your browser, you can set it to do that automatically every time you log off.

Deleting all is the bare minimum.  You can set it to clear at shut down, but best to do it both!  The files can still be recovered by someone who knows how.
I've not done it yet, but I'm looking at cleaning programs...  that I can claim are Anti-spyware... I'd put it in my seceurity folder!

cccleaner, webroot window washer look promising

If you are worried about doing this because your SO or boss has access to your computer BE CAREFUL!! As the other posters have said, if you do it on a computer, there are people who can recover it (especially PI's and investigators for divorce attorneys).  Also beware of programs that can record and log each of your keystrokes.

Best to do this on a computer no one has access to!

Download Google's new browser Chrome.  It has an Incognito Mode.  In this mode every site you visited will be deleted and not show up on your history.

Google's New Chrome program is far from "Incognito". Yes it does what people say it does by wipping your history clean but there have been MANY mainstream articles and news storys about the program. And guess what these stories site as Chrome usefullness - doing activities such as this away from your SO. So imagine what your wife will say after watching the story on CNN when you install Chrome!

Another issue you need to be aware of is when you delete your history via the Tool function you are not just deleting your history but ALL history. So when your SO starts to wonder why she has to type in her password everytime to log-on to whatever site (even through she tells it to save her login) questions will be asked!

The best advice is search on a computer that you exclusively use - Get a laptop. Tell her its your work computer.

Finally, if a second computer is not an option. Many PC using window can be logged on at start up by the actual user. With each user needing a password to load ones settings. By doing this you can install whatever you want, Chrome, Firefox etc and not have it on your wife's settings. You can also manually delete your history and not delete hers. What this will not protect you from is prying PI or computer software programs that are intended to watch your every move.

If you think your wife has any reason to be concerned then I would suggest not given her any ammo. I made the mistake many years ago when my GF logged on to my email account and started reading my messages. I would have never noticed until one day she comforted me about an email that "thanked me for breakfast". Granted I was caught...but I just acted pissed (which I was for her snooping in the first place) and told her that she was writing her own story and falling for her own nonesense. I dug my way out since the email came from the other woman's work e-mail and I told my GF that it was a breakfast meeting. (Not an overnight - breakfast in bed) Fortunately, the email was ambiguous enough to allow my explaination to pass.
