Newbie here.  I've searched but can't find info on this.  I'm the type that wants to know the results of risks, so if they happen I'm already prepared.

But what happens on the day I'm brought in?  
Are there ways to make sure that my name and face aren't plastered in the papers?  
Any ways to make sure loved ones don't find out?
Should I have a lawyer beforehand?

Its a midemeanor in most places.  Which means you'll be arrested, cuffed, taken to jail to await processing and release on Citation to Appear for initial Hearing as long as you have no other prior arrests or outstanding warrants.  How long in jail could vary from a few hours to a very long day depending on the efficiency of the department involved in processing  you.  When released you might need to make your way across town to reclaim your property (wallet, keys, shoelaces) without those things...long walk in badly fitting shoes.

You are not owed a phone call prior to release, since prior to hearing or questioning no lawyer is required, though they might be nice and give you one.  If they keep you 16 hours it could be hard to explain your incommunicado absense to folks.  

After release, you show up for prelim Hearing.  If the prosecutor procedes, then you later show up for trial, so a couple court dates mid day on work days.  YMMV on the penalty depending on area, anything from fine to community service to John School to unlikely a little jail time...if you have no other record.

Its on your permanent record, mug shots, finger prints with the FBI, the works, unless they allow removal after a few years, and records are searchable.   Awkward for job searches. Court notices get mailed to your permanent address, might contain name of charges.

Some jurisdictions might consider it a Sex Offender crime, don't know.  That would add a new level of pain given registry requirements.
