Newbie here but member since 2006 just never took the leap until now.  Planning to see a provider next month and don't want to look like an complete idiot. I'd appreciate any suggestions on where go so I know how i can protect myself and not make the provider uncomfortable. Thanks.

look for that lifesaver icon near the upper right hand corner of this forum page.

take a close look at Provider Relations 101. That's a good place to start.

Read the whole self help center, it will answer most of your questions.  If you still have some after that, come back here and ask.
