Wikipedia has some stuff on the history of condoms.

They go back several hundred years.

While BB was common, so were STD's. Fortunately very few STD's were a death sentence prior to AIDS, but don't forget syphilis.

STD's have been around about as long as we have, as have unwanted pregancies, etc.

Just curious how providers avoided STD's before condoms were invented?

I think the lack of protection caused the spread of disease and pregnancy which led to some countries banning prostitution while others legalized and monitored/regulated it.  That same consequence of inadequate protection gave prostitution the stigma of being "dirty", "dangerous", and "seedy".

At least, according to the website below (scroll down to "The History of Condoms". :)

What did people do before then for birth control and STD prevention? Probably some sort of elaborate dance and animal sacrifice. (Please note that this has been since shown to be ineffective -- so no doing the tandem Macarena and then slaying a gerbil instead, 'kay?)

The women had no say in whether or not the guy used a condom. Lots of guys got diseases from these babes. The ones who didn't want to risk it used condoms made out of sheep gut. The good old days, lol.
