I finally got my tracfone to begin my hobby. Is it ok to activate it from my home computer. I live in an apartment and I get my internet access through my landlords wireless router. It says you can activate it from the phone itself, but I don's see how to do it. Does anyone know the procedure to activate from the phone?
to activate a Tracfone is to use a public pay phone. Find one near the store where you bought it (with cash of course). Dial the activation number, enter a code, ignore the part where they ask for your personal info, and you're good to go.
I heard you can activate directly from the phone, but I couldn't figure out how to do it. If you can do it, then Tracfone makes that function very hard to find. Also, again, if you are paranoid like me, you should not use your home computer network, even if it belongs to your landlord. You can be tracked down that way. Not that anyone would ever bother. But -- paranoid!

If you want to use a computer, you can download and install a program called JAP:
When running, all of your traffic goes from you computer, over to Europe, and then from there out through one of many anaymous computers. There is no way for anyone to track back to you through Tracpohnes access records.
By default it's kind of slow, OK for activating a phone but not much else. You can pay for upgraded speed and then potentially you could do all your TER and other network activity with it. I have not yet taken that step myself.
That would really be the way to go for the truly paranoid...
Also while we're being paranoid, don't turn on your hobby phone within a mile or two of your house, and take out the battery when not in use - in theory if someone were trying to track down a phone they can ask a phone company to turn it on remotley and then triangulate location once it is on. Not very accurate, but it could get someone close to your location.
Please do not believe the traceability claims of programs like JAP ot TOR. You will be untraceable if looking at text or sending files. Pictures which are embedded in script [popups, java, etc.] contain tags which will give away the location of the computer viewing them. To avoid detection, use computers in public places and public wifi [away from your residence]. Same goes for cell phones. If you call from your house, the location can be triangulated. But if you have to take that many precautions, why not just use a stranger and pay him to make arrangements on your behalf.
You can add minutes there I know. I did mine through my home computer & it's fine but then I have not had my phone undergo scrutiny. You could possibly use a library or McD if you must use internet. Tracphones default address is some corperate offices in Florida. H
