Get a protonmail.ch account, not protonmail.com.  The further removed from USA control, the better.

...I know I did not give them another address so they either didn't ask for one or I ignored it. I've had the account for more than a year. They didn't ask for a name or any kind of info. Their whole thing is about being anonymous and secure on the web.

I would not give them an alternate address. Do they indicate the giving of an address is required? I'm not sure what good another address would do. The e-mail is set up with a double password and they say they don't have it so if you forget yours you are out of luck on getting a hint or one time code to get into your e-mail like many other applications and sites do.

Edit: I just checked. Apparently they now have an option for another e-mail address so you can recover if you lose, forget, or whatever your password. That wasn't offered when I signed up. However, it says it's optional so don't do it if you don't want to. It's not unusual for e-mails and other sites to ask for another e-mail as a fall back when you can't remember, etc.

your password so I think it's normal. I didn't put in another email address and I was able to get an email account opened with protonmail.

... about 3 months ago I also started using Tutanota ( tutanota.de ) as another great email alternative.
I really like them both.

...once every 3 weeks or your account is lost, locked or some such. I use Hushmail for my personal e-mail. I access it daily so no issues there.
