Why do some posts on discussion boards have the square orange box with two links of a chain inside?

There is a LINK inside that post

It means that the post contains a link (hot link) in the "Link URL" box. If someone simply puts a link in the text body of the post, no link icon appears on the subject line.

I think they need to add something similar for the "Picture URL" box so we know which posts contain a photo (e.g., Provider photo in the ad boards) or image ... like this one:
