The fact that you are on P411 and have more than one or two current references is usually enough, but it will depend on the provider and how the two of you interact in the initial communications, as well as what other info might be out there about you in the ether.
But, in general (and it hurts me to say this), what London says is correct, and your references should be adequate. I have no idea at all about the pros and cons of deleting references, as I never even considered doing that. Can't imagine how it helps, unless you want to portray yourself as being newer than you are. That sounds sort of shady.
a client has ok's from providers that are no longer active?
That is, if I have 10 ok's and 5 of them are from retired providers do you ignore those?
Would the fact that those retired providers were well reviewed and known( opposed to, for ex, BP providers with limited history) even though you couldn't contact them make any difference?
I understand an ok from 2009 would not be valid but what if they just went inactive in the last two months?
So if your recent refs are still active and have a good set of reviews, I doubt it's going to be a huge issue. If it were the opposite with your most recent ones being retired, that is another story.
I usually delete the old ones because a retired provider cant be contacted anyway.
It makes it look like I have less "experience" compared to someone who might leave all of their ok's up but...
Most of the providers on P411 dont even look at your profile when you request appointments. I guess just being a member of the site is good enough for them.I've only had one provider ask me for more info.

In the case of guys who use their real info. then that is how you would provide a reference. You can only go by what you know. I personally don't do any of that, but I always ask the lady to have him tell her when he saw me, what city, what hotel, what I wore, and anything else that would remind me of who he is. Guys who write reviews, are the easiest for me to verify, because all I have to do is go back and look at his review of me to know who he is.
I had one lady refuse to take a reference because I could not give her the guy's email and number...that is how she screened. She would match up the email and number he gave her with what the reference told her, but I don't hold onto that info so she lost a client. I told her what I would need to vouch for him, knew who he was, but she would not go that route.
