I don't know if I'd be any good at this, but I'm interested.  I want to start off slow.  Any tips from hobbyists or pros?  Should I hook up with an agency to begin with?

This could be a real life changing choice and one that should not be taken lightly. You will put you health, personal future, privacy and life on the line. Many think it won't happen to me but what if! Let's just say this is an older sister giving you a heads up. If you have no clue find a good agency to learn from or go work in a massage parlor for awhile. Keep yourself safe.

is that they benefited from having a mentor to show them the ropes.

There are provider discussion boards around that might be able to serve that purpose such as DZ411.

Lovisa,
I think it's good that you have come to TER.  You'll learn so much if you read back several pages on each board.  There are no short cuts, it's part of doing the homework.
Consider this only if you think you can be an honest provider.  You have an absolute right to set your menu, pricing, rules & standards...  but you need to know the scams & rip offs so that you do not accidentally get labelled as such.
You will most likely need some contineous new friends...  but the best ladies have regulars or repeat customers.
best wishes,
skb

You can start at places like escortblogs, and learn alot from others experiences. There is alot of research to do, including what type of provider you would like to be.

Take your time, research, and learn about screening, safety, etc.

Feel free to send me a PM and I can give you a list of sites I found helpful

Before I started I read this site back and forth.  I checked out other sites and decided what I was comfortable doing.

Take your time, read, research and if you are able to find a mentor.

Being a Provider isn't for everyone..... but if you decide it is something you want to pursue, I agree with the advise of doing your research. There is so much available online now that with any amount of effort you should be able to gather the basics.

While agencies are a nice comfortable way to get introduced to the business, many times you either don't learn skills/tips and behaviors that are conducive to you being Independent. Evaluating what your strengths are in regards to your own personal discipline, organization, marketing ability and overall business management will help decide many of the issues you have raised about contemplating your splash into the hobby.

I'm from the 'old school'  of thought and believe that the best way for a woman to attain a start to her career is to find a mentor who has proven themselves to be successful with the same style that you are looking to emulate. There are also tons of private providers boards who offer help and suggestions once you have jumped into the business and started building yourself. The most positive characteristic about entering the Adult world as a provider with today's technology is that the networking has risen to new heights and it is much easier than ever before to customize your level of participation to match your own personal lifestyle and the goals you wish to attain by your participation as a provider.

Welcome aboard if you decide this is something you wish to take on as an endeavor. Best wishes in whatever choices you make-

I'm in my mid 20's.  I've been trying to do research but a lot of sites, including this one, require reviews or money, neither of which I have.  I'm doing what I can though.  I am worried about the legal aspect as I don't expect this to be a life long career and have plans to use my college degree.  I think it could prove to be advantageous in both the excitement and monetary aspect and I have no problems with the morality of the profession.  I respect this profession as much if not more than many others and think I could benefit from it as well as with the people I meet with and the friends I choose to share it with.  I just have concerns about the obvious things and am unsure where to start.  If someone knows of a good mentor in the new england area could you point me in the right direction?

either PM me here or email me at [email protected] I can put you in touch with a few very smart, very safe providers that have extensive networks in New England. I'm almost certain they would be happy to give you 30  minutes.

Or at least be willing to set you in the right direction.
