There are a lot of urgent care clinics that will test you and accept your insurance which are much faster than going to your local health department. Most of them require that you call back in to get the results or go back in to get the results rather than call you, but if you are married you may want to double check about that before giving them your information. These places are usually the fastest at getting you your results back, and if you are not using protection, please use it for the love of God, good luck!

I've been hobbying for a couple of months now and wanted to be responsible about it.  Which brings me to the subject of STD testing.  Since I've never had the need to do this before, what is the best way to get tested?  As someone with health insurance, should I go see a general physician and request one or is there a better way to go about this?

I'd welcome any and all feedback.  Thanks.

If you go to your general physician the lab might send the results to your home. That happened to me. The better option is a place like tstd.org which is anonymous, and you get the results online.

Yeah, I had a close call with that a number of years ago - they called my house and my wife picked up, as she answered the phone the nurse was saying something like "I wonder if he will tell her about it..." Then she switched gears, and left a message for me.

I got home to be asked if there was something I needed to tell her. I am sure the blood drained from my face and my life as I knew it passed before my eyes as I said farewell, but my wife believed me when I professed to have no idea at all what the nurse was talking about and made up some BS about the purpose of my doctor visit.

It was then a couple of years before I hobbied again.

Now, when I get tested (at least every six months, and more often if something risky happens despite my precautions), I go to the local (if 30 miles away is local) GLT clinic where the testing is cheap and confidential. I pay cash and give them no usable contact info. The atmosphere has a nice edge, and I am wondering how it will go when I run into someone I know, but I figure we will be okay with mutual confidentiality.

My advice is to make a post on your regional board asking for clinic recommendations. I would not put it on your insurance or use any doctor who knows you - call me paranoid if you want, but that is a trail that too many people can follow. What if the insurance company decided to cancel you because of your record of STD testing, or you were turned down for life insurance? Some things are best kept truly confidential, IMO.

No, not married, so I don't have concerns about a SO finding out about the test

I just had an appointment at a doc's office and asked about getting tested for STDs.  He said they didn't do these tests at his office and I should go to the city's Health Dept.  I don't know if this is common with all docs but he said it was more anonymous that way.

AIM which tests the adult industry and provides panels of tests at a reasonable price is available in L.A.

I've used them twice.  $250.  You get a number and you call the 800 number an hour before you go to the lab and sign in using that number.  Results are available on their website.

So far, so clean.  :)
