The OP was asking a hobby related question and my response was also geared toward the hobby . When someone comes into my world it is just you and I ,a quiet place I aim to make relaxing and inviting , comfortable and sexy..

As for two guys in the civi world out in a bar or club? I assume? This is not the same as any other arena .Reason? OK so let's for just a moment visualise

Your in a club music banging people drinking , dancing and what ever it is they are doing .
Here is the issue really. None of the things on my list can be determined in the volume going on in there .
All you have is a bunch of people who can only really hear the DJ's choice hits not your voice ,your inflection ? Lost to the sound.No way to determine if you are a caveman or an intellect of great magnitude.SO you personally set yourself up for the only thing they have to go by on you at that time in that place ,in that moment IS what you look like , you removed all other options .

Further complicating things is you are standing in a meat market situation in which you are all lined up like different makers of Ham. Your hammy friend is of course coming in with visually the goods, he appears to be Boars head to the crowd .While maybe you are the natural ham from Friedman's .Sorry to compare you to deli meat here but the fact remains the set up was caused by you and your friend .Also we have no idea how smooth you or your friend are comparatively speaking. Is he also sort of sexy? Confident? Does he talk first of the two of you ? Does he pull up chairs does he have a lot of experience on the pick up? I think you are comparing apples and oranges by asking to compare civi to hobby experience. I really do.

Then we have of course the unavoidable fact we are all animals , all of us .We happen to be pack animals.

When you have 1 dog no pack, 2 dogs still no pack, 3 or more dogs equals a pack right? OK so now you have the boys and girls aka pack in one place .Imagine getting 200 dogs together OMFG ..

OK The hormones are flying we are not at our normal selves the one you share with friends at home not the one your family knows, no you are oozing manly i wanna find a hot chick and fuck her eyes out of her head.
