I know that my regular provider is independent. Could she have referred me to an agency, or do all the providers in town know each other?

Yes, alot of them do.  They sometimes work together, play together, and go out for coffee together.

The ladies backchannel each other at least as much as the guys here.  It may be to verify a reference, get professional advice, or just to "hi" to a friend.

Sounds like your regular likes you, she wanted you to have a good time.  Did she refer you to an agency?, who cares!!!  Indies and agencies can, and do co-exist!
