I'd guess it's got to do with the strains of time & money that xmas puts on things. That, and family seems to want to do things together, and so far I can't convince my SO to come along
I notice that the number of reviews coming from my area have reduced greatly. Is this typical for the hobby? Do the holidays have a great impact on the number of sessions being requested?

During the holidays, many providers who have families focus their attention elsewhere. Likewise, a lot of hobbyists spend there money and time elsewhere as well. Still there are plenty of providers who know that there are more than a few lonely men, and even more hoping to escape the embrace of family and friends.
My first hobby weekend was over Thanksgiving, nearly 20 years ago.
I know that agencies are frequently discouraged on this board, but the holiday season is usually a great time to try one.
Even though I am a newbie as well (not quite a year), to the contrary, I find that my indie friends and myself are available pretty much as usual, but as you mention it is the gentlemen who have other obligations.
Being already slow... please don't make suggestions to make our holidays even less busy for us. I don't have anything against agencies, but what do you have against us indies by posting such a comment?

I am a practical hobbyist, so imagine this situation:
It is Dec 26th. You are the bachelor uncle visiting family. The nieces and nephews have long exhausted their charm. Everyone has gone out to the after-Christmas sales. On TV, the University of I Don’t Care is playing against Whatever State in the Insert Corporate Name Here Bowl.
Given this – a situation I’ve been in, my mind wondered to the hobby. So what am I to do? I could call all of my indie friends, and leave voicemail hoping that someone is available, or I could make a call to a reputable agency which is more likely to answer the phone and usually has at least one lady available.
Nothing against indies at all, I only suggested that guys broaden their scope in this slow time.
