Can anyone tell me the scoop on being verified by a provider where you are sent to a website requiring your credit card info.  Is this a scam even though it usually says you won't be charged.

in advance; preferably not even for payment during a date.  This leaves too big of a paper trail.  

Besides, identity theft is growing in the US and this industry does have some "questionable characters" involved.
