I'm definitely a little lost with some of the abbreviations. I figured out GFE and BJ was pretty easy, but I am totall lost on others like BBBJ/DATY. Is there a list somewhere or can someone give me kind of the basics?
You found the place (this board) but you obviously haven't looked very hard. There are 14 pages of information on this board. If you only read this first page, you would have found the info that you need on how to search this page.
Sorry, people who know me from TER know I'm usually not like this but come on!
Start by reading the post "Attention Newbies - Please Read!" half way down this first page. We're here to help you but make an effort to help yourself first!!!
I did look, for nearly half an hour. Wow, you're the second incredibly rude person I've gotten a response from. No offense, but if it bothers you so much that I asked the question, you really didn't need to respond, though I'm glad you took the time to try to make me feel so small.
Thanks for the help. Though the attitude was really not necessary.
Wow, why is everyone being such jerks? If you're so bothered by my question, just ignore the question and move on with your life. There's no need to show how rude you can be, that's just immature.
I'm not sure if this was directed at me or jaejae. JJ was just trying to be funny because he knows that I make this same request weekly. Do a search under author for my handle (thirsty) and you'll see. I generally delete 3-4 similar messages before I post a plea for newbies to use FIND MESSAGE.
Just trying to make the point to you and all other newbies that there's a wealth of information already here if you choose to use it.
Is there possibly some way that TER could post your "Attention Newbies - Please Read!" thread in a manor that it stays as the very top thread on the board all the time with any subsequent threads falling in order as they do now starting just below it?
If it could be done, then everyone would see it(i figure everyone reads at least the top thread)and i imagine that it would cut down on alot of the requests for this that you get now.
It's a joke, I even said just kidding. I suppose smiley faces and all wouldn't have helped though.
Try this, bottom left corner, prior to clicking on reading a message you will see a button that says Find Message, click on it, enter your search term, ie: YMMV and it will bring you all the messages in the time frame you specify that include YMMV. Give it a try.
I wouldn't have taken it that badly if two other people ahead of you weren't such jerks about it. it's like I ruined their day just by asking a simple question, and I got way too many hostile answers from such a simpel querry.
Or maybe a quick linke that says "abbreviations". I know a lot of newspapers give a quick key or glossary to what abbreviations mean, so maybe that's something that might prove helpful.
Seems a lot of the old timers here got incredibly hostile towards me for not knowing where to look, and even though I did look and didn't find it, the hostility was just really immature all the way around.
Either way, I found the answers outside of TER by looking a long time on Yahoo. They weren't easy to find here and I still haven't found them. Oh well, nice to know the people who have been on here for so long are immediately so nice and friendly and helpful to new people. At least now I know which people to ignore.
The most intuitive place for a list of abbreviations is in the "Provider Reviews" section of the website. I know that's not something you can change as the discussion board moderator, but you might have more weight in raising it with Staff. You would get far fewer questions about it if a list were in a more obvious place. I have been using TER for about 6 months, and I still come across abbreviations I don't know or have forgotten. So I could certainly use a more conveniently placed list.
questions about terms, definitions and abbreviations are being asked constantly. Many times the answer was posted only a few threads below or in the next page.
Whenever I go to a new location, I always take a little time to check where things are and how others behave. Even with all these messages posted within this thread, one can still find the thread posted by chess04 at the bottom of this page about the definition of MSOG and MichaelCA's response. Beside, thirsty's message "Attn: Newbies - Please Read!" is still in the center of this page.
I know you are pissed because others reacted differently than you expected. However, I hope you will set aside your anger and look at things objectively. Judge for yourself whether you've acted a bit too hastely in your own finger pointing without checking why others behaved the way they did.
This episode reminds me of the time I was in graduate school. Most professors are nice and bend their rules to accommodate students casual behaviors. One day I went to my academic supervisor's office, knock the door and immediately went inside his office. He stopped me right away, told me to stay outside and informed me the proper way to do was to wait for his acknowledgement and permission before I stepped inside his office.
I didn't feel good about it and at the time, I thought he was being harsh. Later, I realized that he was actually trying to teach me the proper way to conduct business in the real world. That was a priceless lesson to me and I benefitted handsomely ever since then.
Here is a brief listing of threads related to terms, definitions and abbrev. in this board in Page 1 and 5. See for yourself whether this topic has been extensively covered or not. (Your request is placed on the top to complete the list.)
7/13/2003 blythehikes : Need help with Abbreviations
7/3/2003 thirsty : Atttn: Newbies - Please Read! ( An explanation of how to find the proper information )
6/30/2003 chess04 : Can anyone pls tell me what MSOG means?
6/25/2003 Boobygoode : The abbreviations in reviews
6/23/2003 dvs1010 : what do all the abbreviations mean?
6/13/2003 cockcola : What does S&M mean??????? (This is right after the following thread by trancelvr that was answered.)
The website you referenced has been listed here many times before. As I have written in the past, I don't think it's a good idea to refer people to another website. The info is here.
JaeJae has started a new thread on this board titled List of Abbreviations & Terms. This way, Newbies can find all abbreviations on one place. However, Newbies (and Vets) still have to learn how to use FIND MESSAGE to access this thread.
You did help, and I appreciate it. Seems like the person who deleted your post is more interested in being a jerk and making new people feel small for asking a simple question than in being remotely nice and helpful.
Being rude seems to be the way most people are relating to each other on here, which is just pathetically sad. You would think that we would want to be as nice and helpful as possible. I guess people full of that kind of anger don't get the whole karma thing. It just makes me feel kind of sorry for them. Thanks for trying to help though. You're the only one in this entire thread who hasn't been a complete jerk about it.
I went to that site and did a little editing and posted it on here with minor changes. This way anytime someone does a search of any term or abbrev. that list should show.
Personal attacks are not allowed on TER message boards. I'm letting your messages through because I feel that if people want to make themselves look bad, I'm happy to let them do it.
You said you spent "for nearly half an hour" searching the board before posting yet you somehow didn't read the post "ATTN: Newbies - Please Read!" half way down the first page. You posted the same question 4 times. (I approved one, which I replied to.) Apparently, you also didn't read the disclaimer that appears on the screen after you post a message... "It may take up to 24 hours for your message to be approved."
Re-read "A Spectator's" message that you just replied to...you're the one who's acting like a jerk! We will help you, but we will not read the board for you.
