Therefore, there is NOTHING wrong with asking the question...though you may receive a disappointing answer LOL.

As for whether she/he receives or gives: Dominants give, submissives receive and switches go both ways.

A good follow up to the initial question is one of intensity - which is generally referred to as light, medium or heavy.

How can we tell BEFOREHAND.  Is is normal when an provider indicates "spanking" in profile that she BOTH gives and receives.  Been to many dommes that will have nothing to do with switching.
