How do you know whether a "group" like BDJ or Independent-Network are really independents? They appear on the surface to be agencies, but claim that they are independents pooling their resources. I want to set up something with both, but are leary of agencies? Any Help?

I remember getting the very same impression from the BDJ website. That they are a network of like minded independents.
That notion was dispelled by one of the BDJ girls. They are in fact a traditional agency.
I've used BDJ several times and the girls are fantastic. But the people taking appointments and managing things are very disorganized. They've screwed up appointments for me on several occasions. Imagine standing outside of a hotel room for 10 minutes with gift in hand while being eyed by hotel staff - it's very uncomfortable. Hopefully Kim, the main person at BDJ is reading this and will get their act together.
I would definetly recommend them though. The girls are really fantastic.
I am with afternoon delight in Houston, which is an independent organization. We often get mistaken by an agency because we have somebody setting up the appointments, but having worked for an agency before, I can tell you that it is very different, to me the real difference is that i do not have somebody controlling my time, I can take as long as I want, socialize with my clients or turn down a call and and not be given a hard time. It does however, come with a price, I am responsible for my advertising, scheduling, location, etc.
