Anyone else have to figure out some other way to get onto websites like TER or those of providers when they are at work?  They use Websense here and I think it filters by searching the "keywords" embedded as search terms in websites.  Is it possible to get around this?

I was thinking that if I had an AOL membership, maybe the sites I pulled up would be like "window in a window" (don't know what the H--- I am talking about so, forgive me  LOL) and the filter wouldn't apply?

Or maybe someone has a better idea (so I don't have to keep sneaking around trying to figure out alternative solutions ... ps if you see a guy hunched in a corner of a public venue with a hotspot trying to make sure that no one can see his screen, come introduce yourself - it's likely me  .... BWAAAAHAAAHAAAHAAA)

Assume anything you view on a work computer is being viewed by your IT department in real-time.

Our IT folks have a big room packed with computers.  They randomly look at what various computers are doing throughtout the day, 24 hours/day.  All outbound/inbound internet activity is logged and looked through.

It's not worth the potential risk of termination for that quick peek at TER or a provider's page during the day.  If you must, bring your own notebook/modem and use dialup during the day on a break, in a private area.

wow ... good point

not sure "exactly" what i could get terminated for but ... don't want to have to start that discussion either

Not a good idea on the work computer.  You can be fired on the spot.

Most firms route all traffic thru netwrok routers which log and track all sites visited.  These logs are then archived, often kept for years; some firms review the logs, others don't;  If your employer ever wants to fire you, one thing their lawyer will have them do is review logs to see what sites you visited - if its a site like TER, "presto" instant good excuse to fire you without cause;  Likewise, if a woman working in your group ever sues, her lawyer will subpoena the logs, find out where you visited, then use it as evidence of a "hostile work environment."  No good can come of viewing anything remotely questionable while at work.  If you really gotta have it, get a cell phone with wireless internet, keep a personal lap top/computer in the office/car, and use it to check messages/boards that can't wait.  That's expensive-y the minute charges - but safe and any eavesdropping is protected by federal law (provided its your personal cell and laptop).

I am not to worried about logs being used against me because if there were any logs, I would be the one setting them up.

Anyways, if you do work for a company with any sort of firewall or proxy or filerting service, I would seriously recommend you do not go to TER or any other "questionable" site.  If you are using a company computer to do so, they are the ones paying for the service, and they can do whatever they want with the logfiles, etc.

Even using proxy servers will result in logfiles that show the visits to these sites because the request for www.theeroticreview.com has the embedded somewhere in either the URL or the posted data.  If the company is logging everything (not too uncommon in this day and age), you will get caught!

Bottom line, don't do it!

Even if you know how to get around the proxy servers (and there are ways) it won't get around random monitoring.  Programs like DameWare allow IT persons to display, on their monitor, exactly what person at Machine Name Whatever, or IP address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx are doing.  Dameware displays a message that somebody is watching your system when they turn their attention to you, but there are applications out there that do this same thing without warning you.

Bottom line:  just as I and everybody else has already said, don't screw around with work computers.  Only use them for work related activities.  Somebody probably is watching.

Even if you do a google search and then click on one of the "finds"?  Meaning, didn,t type the actual address into the browser.

Proxy logs don't care that you didn't physically type the address into the browser.  They log the IP address/URL of the site that IP # xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx requested.

So no, your feeble attempt to outwit a proxy server would do absolutely no good.

You can't pull and end run around your IT department.  Get used to that fact.

Dude- DO NO DOT AT WORK!!!!!!!!It's not worth it!!!!!
