You need to do as harborview said and look for 'newbie friendly' providers.  You could also join one or more of the verification services, DateCheck, Preferred411, and RoomService2000.  These may require some personal info, but it's better to give it to them, than to hand it out to several providers.  Once you have seen some providers, you can ask them to give you a reference in the future.
