I am a relatively recent TER (The Erotic Review for those of you even more nubile than I) member. I found it quite daunting when I first started reading reviews and discussion boards, as I didn't know many of the acronyms. Some of them are hard to figure out from the context, and I'm hesitant to add my numbskull post to every thread asking "What does (insert acronym here) stand for?" This is a waste of space for the majority of readers who already know.
Many of the threads here on the newbie board are inquiries about acronyms, which is fine, but I feel like a simple reference page, perhaps maintained by staff, could really help us newbies out. I'm not talking about another discussion board. Just a page where commonly used acronyms (BJ, BBJ, BBBJ, FS, GFE, ATF, DFK, LE, DatY, YMMV, etc.) are listed, together with their common interpretations. The page could occasionally be updated as new acronyms come into use. I'm just talking about the common ones that show up all over reviews and discussions, not weird invented ones which are used only by one member.
I realize many of these acronyms seem so obvious that it's laughable to TER veterans that anyone could NOT know what they mean. Never underestimate the ignorance of a newbie, however.
I'm certainly not talking about a place where people can argue the nitpicking details of the EXACT meaning of some acronym, like GFE. If anyone really wants to bother with that, I suppose the boards already up are the place for it. Even simple letter-to-word translations would have helped my TER comprehension skills immensely. Just telling me "GFE" stands for "Girl Friend Experience" is enough. I spent much of my early TER reading time thinking GFE meant "Good Fucking Experience." This altered my interpretations of reviews, sometimes leaving me slightly puzzled when I would actually see a provider. Not that I mind either type of GFE!
Nice idea in theory but it gets the lawyers nervous. The main reason this board exists is so TER members can assist each other by providing such information.
Re: lawyer nervousness- makes sense. I'll make do piecing things together from context. I suppose a reference page like I mentioned would be misinterpreted by the prying eyes of LE as condoning/promotion of criminal activities. That's exactly the kind of thing that gets people in trouble. I respectfully withdraw my suggestion
