I haven't been hobbying for a long time and have not come across this situation. I have found a new provider who has half a dozen reviews.  The reviewers are from mostly guys whose history is very recent. One goes back to last year, and two have a Whitelist referral.  My question is should i be comfortable contacting this provider, and not worry about a scam or worse?

If the answers don't give you any feeling of comfort, then take a pass.

start with well review ladies, good reviews, good websites... and trust your gut

How many? Over what period of time? Who else did they review?

But the bottom line is that if you have doubts, look elsewhere. After a while you might get comfortable and experienced enough to be able to tell which reviews are trustworthy, and which are not, but for now if you are new and have some doubts, trust your doubts.
