I am a big fan of verification sites for getting started, and ordinarily recommend them to any Newbie who asks. Date-check, preferred411, RS2K, etc. are all worth looking into and likely have procedures for self-employed blokes like you. The best one for you will depend greatly on your location (p411 is national, but others are more regional).
Unless you are some obscure consultant who doesn't advertise anywhere and hold licenses in your local, it shouldn't be a problem to verify.
Be upfront with the lady you are contacting, note that you are self-employed, and share as much as you are comfortable. She may or may not have other questions. If it doesn't work, try another lady.
