When I registered my trac fone online I just left the default address... I assume a corperate office in Florida. I'm not worried about the ip address. If LE has to dig that far a real crime has been committed & they will find out one way or another. I'm not going to kill anyone & they're not going to look that hard for me. It is a great help however to not have to worry about tracks on my family plan account. skb
I got a Trac Phone to hobby but I have to register it, either by phone or online. Am I being too paranoid in being concerned to register it online (revealing IP address)? I thought the only way around this is to go to a coffee shop with internet access, but it seems like a lot of work. I have a blocked number at work, but concerned about it still being revealed somehow if I do it over the phone, plus when giving a false name and address, I'm not a very convincing liar.

and went to an internet cafe, and used their wireless network, and gave all false info. on the registration form. No problem. I thought it was a little far-fetched to be concerned about my IP address, but want to be a safe as possible. Thanks!
I think if the webpage uses certain technologies (e.g. Java, Javascript, Flash) that it's still possible for the webmaster to ascertain your real IP, if the correct commands are included--even if the client is using a proxy, or tor.
Look, while it's rare that people get outed, caught, blackmailed, extorted, etc, I believe there is no such thing as being too paranoid in this hobby.
A lot of things can go horribly wrong. You should invest into precautions as much as you can until the point at which it becomes overwhelming and the net happiness you derive from the hobby is a poor ROI for your efforts.
You should be especially concerned if: * you are wealthy * you are married * you are famous, or there is a chance you will become famous * you hold a political office, or there is a chance you will hold a political office in the future * you hold a security clearance, or there is a chance you will hold a security clearance in the future * some combination of the above
Be carefull with public libraries. Some libraries require you to swipe your library card to use the public computer. State Universities are similar the require you to have a login to use the public computer.
(was tough finding one, I'll tell ya). The registration process is automated - all they ask for is a zip code (to assign appropriate area code - use yours, use the next town, hell use another state if you want) and a contact phone number. For that I used the number of a local utility that I had memorized.
IMHO - you are not paranoid. Don't use the work phone!!
