Because I'm retired, I faced the same problem when I started.  My solution was to offer to pay her fee and meet a provider in the public place of her choice.  She selected a nice pub/grill for lunch, where we had a good visit to establish a comfort level for her (and me).  It was an expensive lunch, considering her hourly fee.  But, after subsequently having an appointment with her, she provided a reference for another provider who only required one reference, then two references were available and I was on my way.
