I have no idea what is meant by "refrences". Also how can there are some providers who'm i have contaced that send me to a site that requires a credit card and some sort of fee from very low to some that are very high. Is this normal?

That is just a scam.  

A reference is a lady that you have already seen that will vouch that you are a legit client.

If you haven't seen anyone, then you will need to contact the lady you want to see and see if she will screen you. Be prepared to give her your real name and where you work at a minimum.

If you have seen a lady before, you may be able to use her as a reference. The lady you WANT to see will call the lady you HAVE seen to be sure that you are safe, clean, and a gentleman. In this case, you always want to be sure to call the lady you're using as a reference to ask if she's okay with giving you a reference.

Another option, especially for guys just starting, is to join a verification site. There are only a few reputable ones. The ones most used are Date-Check, Preferred411, and if you're in the midwest, (Chicago area) RS2K is widely used.
