Is asking for a $30 paypal deposit for a new client that doesn't have any references, reasonable?

From what I've seen on the board, unless it involves multiple days or travel, deposits are generally frowned on.

The client didn't have a problem with it in the least, but I wonder if I should make this the standard.

Some guys will pay it, many won't.  Asking for a deposit in lieu of references doesn't make sense to me. It may guarantee that the guy will show up but it won't guarantee that he's not a creep. Can I assume that you are otherwise screening these gentlemen?

Of course. I'm doing the standard verifications and screenings as well. It's not in lieu of references at all, but helps me to weed out who is actually serious about seeing me, and who is just 'farting around'.
It's just a little bit of a pain to go through a pretty lengthy process to say yes to someone, and then get a cancellation.
I have no problem with TYFTT in terms of new hobbyists, I haven't had any issues. I think it's really just to make me a little more comfortable with them, and offsets the verification costs.

In that case I would say that you should do whatever makes you feel comfortable. It's your business, your body and your time. Just be prepared for the fact that some guys will not agree to the pay the deposit.

They will freeze your money and close your account so fast it will make your head spin!

Then they make you wait 90 days and then mail you a check!

Stay away from Pay pal!

and quite frankly, it serves little purpose as a client could get the charges reversed for non-delivery.  Oh, yes, if PP finds out servises are illegal, I bet your account will be closed.  In this business Cash is King.

That's the beauty of a free market system. I hate to use the word never, but I never give a deposit. But that's just me. Good luck!

As a veteran hobbyist I will not give a deposit for a variety of reasons.  For one, a provider just cancelled a date for Thursday which we had set up over a week ago.  Aunt Flo came for a visit.  How would I get my deposit back?
