What happens if this happens?

Only asking because, well, let's say one did contact an agency and set up an appointment. But, then they chickened out. So, they would have my info in their system I guess, but I never actually did anything.

so generally speaking you'll get calls returned and find better service in terms of someone actually showing up.

Also agencies are often easier for newbies to get started with.

Likewise, a lot of gals who otherwise would be at a loss for how to operate a business would never get anywhere without an agency to take care of marketing, etc. for them.

Cons:

You'll pay a bit more so the agency can get their cut.

Also there is a fact that an agency is a target for LE, and you never really know if an agency gets busted, your personal info could get into the hands of LE.

As indies, if we're flaky, bitchy, or have old pics etc. word gets around fast. Some independents have been in business for years by virtue of their good reputations.  

Agency rates in my area are generally much cheaper than those of the average independent. Lower prices get more clients in the door...lower rates keep the girls 'busy', business is steadier.  

Agencies take 40-50%, on average. If the agency charges $300, they get $120-150 per appt...it's more worth their time to have a girl see 8 guys per day at that rate, than to raise the rates to $500.  

I worked at $400 agency. Both the agency and I made $200/appt. I had anywhere from 0-8 appointments per day. Average was about 2-3 per day. Average week was about 15-20 total.  

When I went indy, I raised it to $500 then $600. I saw 0-3 clients per day - 3 only happening ONE time. But I kept $500 per 1-hr appt...I'd have had to see 2.5 guys to make that with the agency. If I'd been still working with an agency and raised my rates, tho...we'd both have taken a huge pay cut

But for many here, anonymity is just as important.  

While you are highly unlikely to face any prosecution by your name appearing on an agency bust list, the more likely scenario, although still a small risk, is that LE releases the names to the press.  

This has happened in several large busts of agencies all over the country. Explaining that to the wife/family/boss can be just as devastating as an actual bust for most.

It just depends on your own risk assessment and how much you can stand to lose in his game. If you are extremely LE phobic, I would recommend you stay clear of agencies and stick to well reviewed Indy providers with well established track records of using good business ethics and practices.  

Many also believe outcall (i.e. the girl comes to you/your hotel) is less risky as well

I have worked as indy and agency.  Greatest difference is the girls are 99% of the time higher volume.  Agency makes their money per hour.  Before an agency yells at me, not all agencies are the same.  I am speaking about the agencies in my area (pm if you want to know area). They probably are more efficient at answering phones unless you contact an indy with an assistant.  Price varies, in my area most agencies are less expensive and some even offer half hour meetings.  To each his own.  Pro's and con's to both but typically girls are higher volume with agency.  You can check this yourself by watching review numbers in a given month.  Some men don't write reviews but many do. Great way to gage volume.  Either way have fun!

Pros:

You can make an appt same-day or at the last minute.
You get screened once, and can see multiple girls.  
If you have a bad experience, the owner might comp you on a future visit.  
Incalls are usually conveniently located.
The girls have to answer to someone. Less flakiness.

Cons:
Higher volume. I worked for agency and saw up to 8 guys per day.
You might pass the guy before you in the hallway.  
She might not have time to shower. I was scheduled back to back to back to back at times. One guy left, the other guy was on his way up.  
You might be rushed if the girl is running 'behind schedule.'
Provider fatigue/grouchiness. Try doing the above - it's harder than you think. I was always sore, I constantly got yeast infections. It gets to you.
Girls have less control over who they see - which means, they might not be having such great experiences. That will affect how she feels about you. I feel badly for the nice clients who got me right after I'd seen a jerk.  

If I were a guy, I would NOT want to see my agency self...my indy self, is pretty fun, tho :
