I used to tour to all the major cities.
You get to know how to pack, what to pack, where to stay.....Ask me in a pm if you want...anything I can help with I will.
The best advice I can give you is BLEND in. Look like a tourist. But a happy one. keep your hotel clean. Remove all the trash yourself. Always keep in mind that the hotel staff might be watching you. You might think they don't speak English!! Be good to them and tip them. They in turn will leave you to yours. Most of the time, I have no service. I bring extra linens....so not to call attention to myself. I mean if you ask for washcloths all the time and you are there for a week...ye Gods. It makes them wonder.

SCarolina,
I had to smile when you mentioned speaking English.  My daughter (blonde/blue/white girl) was in DC hotel & asked a staff person for directions.  The staff person replied in Spanish "No hablo Englasis".  Dearest daughter who had just returned from a year in South America & completely fluent in Spanish...  repeated the question on Spanish.
Caught, He gave her what directions he could but added they were instructed not to converse with guests.  He understood English perfectly & probably spoke it as well.

was awesome.
I was at a great hotel in Manhattan.
The marathon was the next day.

There are times when I do interact with hotel staff.
I had a housekeeper. When I checked in I saw her in the hallway. I asked for some extra coffee, and I gave her a tip. The next day she came to my room and she did straighten it up.
I had gone shopping and I showed her a few things. There was also a street festival..with all sorts of good things to buy.
She was so sweet. she told me the next day she was bringing me some earrings.
I tipped her again  :)

The next dat she brought me in a cute little box. She told me her daughter wrapped it. How sweet. Inside were the most gorgeous earrings and necklace. I loved them. I also thought my daughter would love them. When I got home and showed my other daughter, the first thing she said was how much her sister would love them.
Moments like this, when you are of this world..seem unreal. The thoughtfulness of others. So keep in mind, the housekeeping staff.
You never know what they might do.

PS

At a hotel in Boston, the clerk in the gift shop GAVE me 2 tickets to see Billy Joel at the Garden.
This was at least 3 years ago. I posted on the ter Boston board to try and get a friend to go with me. I ended up going alone.
Great stories.
Thanks for sharing yours
xoxo

A little kindness goes a long way.  I was always taught (and now teach) to treat people the way you would want to be treated.  That's a nice story sexy.
Thanks for the smile.
