If the letter from SS only has the last four digits of your SSN, then you are probably going to be OK.  Enjoy Mrfisher's omlette.

Those of you on this thread may recognize my handle as a newbie who's asked for (and received) helpful advice on surmounting a problem registering on p411 and DateCheck.  The good news is, I have now successfully done so on p411 and want to share how I did it for those in a similar predicament.  Here's the background:  I'm retired, so I have no employer # for the services to verify; I also haven't been active since 1993 so I have no provider references.  When I tried to register on DateCheck, the site said no retired persons would be able to register.  Because of advice received on this site yesterday I called p411 and the rest was simple.  I explained the problem to a nice lady who said there was actually no problem at all.  I'd just have to go through the standard telephone sign-up process, then fax or e-mail them three proofs of name and address.  I sent a copy of my driver's license; a copy of the letter from Social Security when I started receiving benefits; and the bill for my cell phone showing the same number I'd registered with p411, as well as my address.  They billed my credit card, I faxed the material they wanted and, by the time I returned from a brief errand, there was an e-mail confirming my registration with my ID number, etc.  It couldn't have been easier.  The lady from p411 who handled it signed the e-mail "Faithfully, Nicole."  So, not only did I get registered, I got some free irony, too!  For those of you who fear giving your employer contact info, perhaps p411 and DateCheck will permit this method as well, though I can't guarantee it.  I didn't ask, but I'm sure there are other forms of identification in addition to the ones I used that would be acceptable to either service.  I know it takes a leap of faith to divulge this information, but that's the way this world works -- for very obvious reasons -- so if you want to play, man up.
I hope this helps others in my predicament, and thank you again to those on the site who offered helpful advice.  I hope to be able to dip my toe (and other things, too!) in provider waters in the next month or so.  I promise to post reviews so others can benefit from my experience, as I've benefitted from reading the reviews all of you have posted.  Again, thanks to all.

sounds like you gave them everything they needed to steal your identity!!! the only worse would be to give them your bank account info.

so I would not avoid using these services on account of identity theft reasons.

As the saying goes, you can't make an omelet without cracking a few eggs.

I agree (obviously) with MrFisher and Keystone.  First of all, I've done my homework on this site and knew p411 had a good rep.  That being the case, why would they destroy their credibility (and with it their entire business model) by stealing people's IDs?  There are lots of easier ways to do that if you want to.

You "should" be OK in most circumstances...but if they tried hard enough, you just made their job easier because:

...there is a certain correlation/pattern between your DOB (especially along with the year) and how the SS #s are setup that makes it easier to guess the combo (especially since they have the last 4 digits).  Something to be wary about!

Interesting article, JRT, and thanks.  Given some of the info in it, I'm less concerned anyone could figure my full SS # out from the last 4 digits.  Also, I've been a victim if identity theft in the past and have permanent fraud alerts with the three main agencies.  I get calls from my credit card companies all the time checking about specific transactions.  Still, I'll go back and double check to make sure the alerts are still in place because it can't hurt.  Thanks to the original poster for his concern.
