ScotIrisha's attempted  blacmail/extortion situation (below) had experienced guys advising us to use a hobby phone.

What is it? How do you get one? How do you get a phone where you don't have to show an I'd? What are the costs associated with having one?

Any information you seasoned guys and gals could share would be much appreciated.

Much discussed topic. I put a link to one thread on hobby phones. You can do a search. On the first page of this board, there is a search feature. Click on it, then in the subject box, put in hobby phone. Set the search date at 180 days. You'll get threads on this topic

that is what I use for work...very very easy..

My work phone is registered under a fake name and address..therefore, not linking back to me if searched.

They are so easy to get.  Just run to the store and see all they have.

TracFone is a common brand.  Buy with cash, reload with cash.  Costs are minimal.  Register it to a fake address & don't link it to your e-mail (or use another free one).
There are others but the same principals apply.  Bought mine at WalMart.

phone number? I'm a little paranoid about them getting my IP address. And, they ask for a home phone number. Can you just make up one, like for the name and address?

Are the Trac-Fones prepaid with minutes that are useable in other states? If I'm traveling in another state, can I use the minutes there or will there be "roaming charges?" If there are additional charges, how do they charge for them with a pre-paid? Thanks for any insight --

I have used Virgin Mobile for over 5 years.  The phone was inexpensive (Best Buy) and I add $20 of airtime every 3 months to stay current.

Seems to me TracPhone was under 20 to buy & likewise 20 every 3mo for service.  I never use all the minutes.  I bought a new motorola flip & it stays charged much better than my old one...  which worked fine.
I bought the new one as I swap the phones in my belt carrier when on a date...  & I'd upgraded by regular phone so this fits & looks similar also.

Dude, if you think you can get away being anonymous by just getting a hobby phone and email, keep in mind that providers will try and call your hotel room and sometime even your work, some will ask for ID. Don't want to discourage you, but you gotta keep a big picture in mind
