The way I see it the term alias AS USED on this board is any name other than the one on your TER birth certificate.
For the purpose of this board The name on your TER birth certificate is your "real name" and any other name you use is an alias
As for me, I suppose,technically,  you could say I  have numerous aliases, however since the Followme family is so large I allow my cousins and other family menbers to sign on using my TER log in name then go to their names such as
SantaFollowmeClaus
FatherFollowme
EasterFollowmeBunny
PopeFollowmeLXIX
DrFollowmeOBGYN
RabbiFollowme
Followmeopolis
ClassFollowmeClown
CoachFollowme
to name just a few of my family (there are many others )
So technically these are aliases , however in my case they are all real  members of the followme family.
To the best of my knowledge they do behave themselves.

barely worth asking...but I am just modestly curious....

what is the difference between your handle and an alias?!?!

I keep seeing "you posted as an alias"...isn't stanvangun my alias? is there a place to establish 'other' identities that I'm not aware of?

When you post something, your handle automatically identifies you and others can know that it is your handle because the envelope indicating the way to send a PM will appear when someone clicks on your post.  When you use an alias, the envelope will not appear indicating that it is an alias.

If you want to use an alias, go to Account Manager and then click on My Aliases.  There you can choose any number of aliases and they will become availiable to choose from whenever you want to post under an alias.

You should read up under TER's policies about the correct use of an alias.  If you abuse an alias by making personal attacks or similar outrages, the mod may just expose you.

Also, if you post on a thread using an alias, you may not make subsequent posts on the same thread using another alias or even your handle.

This was not a stupid question at all and everyone should be familiar with how to use an alias.

For acceptable use of the alias feature.

I have many many aliases that I use for different boards, or different purposes.
I enjoy using them whenever I feel like it, which is most of the time.

Just remember, there are a lot of people who whine about the alias feature. Many of them are not VIP, so I look at it as a perk. Have some fun using them, but keep yourself in compliance with the rules.

I can't imagine a scenario where I would want to or need to 'be' someone else. but if other people like it and use it...cool.

Yes, nobody knows who "stanvangun" is. And you are correct that it hides your true civilian identity.  

However, as you see more and more ladies (or perhaps even ultiamtely go to a meet and greet with other hobbyists and providers) the TER community will get to know stanvangun and his personality (i.e. identify your face and your persona and views with your TER handle). Dont worry, we are not going to out you to your family and friends.

Now as you become more known on the boards and in the community, there may be a controversial topic that arises on the boards that you would like to respond to and take a minority (and perhaps very unpopular) position. Here, you may not want to use stanvangun (because you dont want to offend the TER community who knows you (only in a hobby perspective) but rather you would want to post under an alias. You can then express your opinion under this alias, and no one will ever connect it to stanvangun.

So while your TER handle does hide your true civilian identity, ultimately, it will not hide your TER identity. You may find an alias useful in expressing an unpopular viewpoint.
