I am very new to this (as in still working up to my first but I want to do it so badly). I totally understand why providers need to verify the people they are going to meet via references and work # etc. What I am having a problem with how as hobbyists do we limit our risk by verifying that the providers are legit i.e. not wackos or LE. This is the hardest part for me because I feel so at risk giving a work number or other personal info for that matter.

and you shouldn't have any problems. Work numbers and personal info are so that _she_ can verify _you_. Good providers discard that info as soon as you check out a-ok. Well-reviewed providers most likely aren't LE. As far as being wacko's, the reviews will probably take care of that, too. However, treat them badly and don't be surprised if they get medieval on your sorry a$$.

Research Review Respond

Verification is necc for OUR safety not to blackmail ruin your marriage or defame your position at work in any way. Its very scary for a new person in the Hobby. For your first provider stick to someone maybe that has several reviews. Not to discredit those of us that only have a few.. ahmm
But this will get you comfortable and help you understand the process with people perhaps that are more willing to have their "info " out there.
