Contacting a tour guide

I'd like to set up a birthday event, first Greek Island cruise, for me on my 64th.

I've been combing through back page advertiser reviews and here.  With out a doubt, here has given me more potential tour guides.

I have a basic framework or outline of how I would like the tour to start and end.

Since this won't happen for a few more weeks I've been wondering how to proceed?  Many of the tour guides list an email adr, and of course phone numbers.

My first instinct is to just email them with the basics and ask them if they are interested being a tour guide for someone who is not used to using tour guides. I look at email because I value time; I don't want to waist their time on the phone since this won't happen for a few more weeks.

Any comments or suggestions will be very appreciated.

It would be helpful is you explaned why you think my question, a question from a newbie, does not belong on the newbie board.

My question is not about how to find prospects, but rather how to approach/contact them.

I ask that because, well because I'm a newbie.

Huuuuum? Come to think of it, why is this "How to" question in a regional board?

Since you are a Boston guy, is this the Boston region?

Use their preferred form of contact (usually email is the first way, or a screening form on their site--and I'm assuming you are talking about TER providers who you have found by searching the database here), and read through their website carefully.

Just say you are interested in Greek and wanted to make sure that was a part of the experience.  That's it.  Don't go into details or anything beyond that.  Or, if it's not clear whether she offers Greek every single time, ask something like, "As part of my experience, I am looking for Greek.  Please let me know if you would like to schedule."

The key is...don't ask too many questions, and NEVER waste their time.  Every provider gets way too many tirekickers, and this is a surefire way to blow up an otherwise potential booking.

On the other hand, if you are kicking tires, then kick tires, and don't worry if it's not a fit.

Perhaps if you had simply posted something like "I am new at this and seeking to find a provider who offers Greek.  What is the best way to contact a lady?"

In other words, keep it simple.

By the way, I am from Boston but the Newbie board is a national board.  If you look to the left you will see menu's for choosing Regional Boards and Regional Ad Boards if that is what you are looking for.

Good luck with your search!

Providers' profiles indicate if Greek is on the menu.  When you find one that offers it, read her reviews.  You might PM one or two of her reviewers to find out if she really offers a good experience in the Greek Isles.  I would shy away from ad sites like backpage, stick to sites like this one, and providers with an ample number of reviews by established reviewers.

As already mentioned, use whatever contact method the provider specifies to contact her.  BUT, let her know you are serious, don't waste her time.  If you want to schedule the cruise, do it, don't just try to chat with her.

Read the reviews, but remember that Greek is always YMMV. Meaning, that depending on your size and your demeanor, she may choose not to allow it with you even if it is on her menu.

One piece of advice. You say, "I have a basic framework or outline of how I would like the tour to start and end." Unless it is a lady you know VERY WELL, let her take the lead. She'll best know how to go about the voyage without any undue injuries or discomfort. Real Greek isn't at all like in porn - really!

I'd mention your interest in a Greek voyage (in those terms or something similarly euphemistic) AFTER you have been screened, just in order to give her a chance to prepare for the appointment. I wouldn't mention it again until you are both naked on the bed.

offer it to you. It will depend on how big you are, but if she charges extra for that service and can't accomodate you, a refund is in order. Also, stop using backpage, unless she has a history of solid reviews.

Thank You everyone for your time spent posting a reply.  AND, many thanks for all of the replies.  Many were most helpful, especially those offering insights beyond my imagination.  Exactly was I was looking for.

As it turns out, for the first time in my life, I have an advatage in being just average!

The main thrust behind (couldn't help myself--had to use that exact phrase) my question was which way of contacting would not waste her time.

For me, time is very valuable.  I'm going through the phase of life when one has to accept the eventuality of one's own death.  That means not wanting to waste the time I have left.

A few years ago, someone pointed out that if someone steals $100 from you, it can be returned at a later date because money is fungiable.  But, if someone steals or wastes an hour of your time, it can never be returned.
